    Direct Vision Standard (DVS)

    What is DVS?

The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) and the safety permit system for heavy goods vehicles lay down certain regulations for trucks weighing more than 12 tonnes when they enter Greater London. Truck operators must obtain a safety permit before they can drive into the city; otherwise, they risk receiving a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

The DVS is a measure of how well an HGV driver can see through their cab windows, particularly in terms of keeping an eye on pedestrians and cyclists who are close by.

This entire DVS and HGV safety permit program is part of the Mayor of London's plan to make London's roads extremely safe, with the goal of completely eliminating all deaths and serious injuries in transportation by 2041.

It is expected that many other cities and regions across the UK will adopt similar systems to this in the near future.

KEY DATE: Starting on October 28, 2024, if you want to bring your truck weighing over 12 tonnes into Greater London, it will need to either have a three-star rating or be equipped with a Progressive Safe System.

MV Commercial can fit the following to your truck to make it DVS compliant:

    • Low Vision Window
    • Camera Monitoring Systems, including Blind Spot Cameras
    • Side Scan Sensor Systems & Moving Off Information Systems
    • Audio Warning Systems, Turn Left and Reversing Alarms
    • Vehicle Signage and Warning Notifications

Fleet Operate Recognition Scheme (FORS) Standard

    What is FORS Accreditation?

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme, FORS, is a nationwide accreditation program tailored to highlight outstanding achievements in various aspects of business operations within the transportation and logistics sector.

Introduced in 2008 by Transport for London, FORS serves as a comprehensive quality management system designed to elevate industry standards throughout fleet operations by setting rigorous benchmarks and evaluating companies against specific criteria.

The FORS accreditation system is stratified into three distinct tiers: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Businesses receive a particular level of accreditation based on their effective fulfilment of designated FORS prerequisites.

MV Commercial can fit the following equipment to your vehicle as part of your FORS Silver / Gold application:

    • Camera Monitoring Systems, including Blind Spot Cameras
    • Side Scan Sensor Systems & Moving Off Information Systems
    • Audio Warning Systems, Turn Left and Reversing Alarms
    • Vehicle Signage and Warning Notifications

    ULEZ

HGVs over 12 tonnes entering a ULEZ region will expect to have a HGV Safety Permit to show your vehicle meets the Direct Vision Standard. In addition to this, trucks need to be Euro VI (NOx and PM). These engines are generally those first registered with the DVLA after 1 January 2014.

Check if your vehicle is compliant here, and if it is not, don’t worry - we can help you source a great replacement truck for your fleet that will be reliable, complaint, and more efficient.
